Derby shines once again at enthusing STEM for young people

50 exhibitors provided an overflowing display of STEM interaction at The Big Bang East Midlands Fair 2017. Companies from around the region came together in the UK initiative to drive and promote STEM careers with hands-on inspiration for our younger generation.

Sponsored again by Derby City Council and supported by Enterprise for Education The Big Bang East Midlands saw 1000’s of school children attend the event with their teachers for workshops and shows that encompass STEM in a new light.

The Big Bang East Midlands 2017 Feedback:

“Really great event, so much fun talking to lots of children and young adults, who are truly interested in what we do.” - Exhibitor
A great venue for the event with good exhibits – my students particularly enjoyed the Exotic Zoo. More schools need to get involved with the Derby competition!” - Teacher
“I feel that coming here has enabled me to see how science and maths can lead to different careers prospects in life and where I can qualify for certain qualifications.” - Student

E4E provided a Q & A session for the Derby Competition participants, in order to engage with engineers and experts in their field. Paul Makinson Deputy Broker from E4E chaired the session.

Fruity keyboard micro:bit coding from The Institution of Engineering and Technology, enthused users in the world of musical coding, whilst Fuze used the Hello World Basic code program which then develops quickly onto controlling LEDS and light sensors.

Institution of Civil Engineers provided their famous bridge to schools activity with the opportunity for students to put construction techniques to the test. Ecologists from Atkins explained how vital it is not to disregard animal and plant welfare whilst growing the worlds transport infrastructure, as they provided a workshop entitled Batty about bats!

We must say special thanks to the University of Derby who supported the event with an array of on hands expertise for young visitors. Workshops included psychology, design and build, 3D audio for virtual reality and crime science investigation.

The event once again supported Derby companies with the Derby village exhibitor area. Lubrizol, Toyota, Rolls-Royce, Pentaxia and new to this year’s event; Multiverses all brought an array of company STEM career path knowledge for young people to engage with and these are what Big Bang a true success.

We welcomed a new Rail section this year with key players in the industry coming together from SNC Lavalin, Bombardier, Network Rail, National College for High Speed Rail, The young Rail Professionals, Rail Accident Investigation Branch and The Rail Forum East Midlands. This gave concentrated rail advice for any visitors that wanted to know about apprenticeships and job opportunities open in rail innovation.

The whole day was once again a huge success and you’d mad not to be part of the day in some way next year. Get in touch on 01827 316297.
