Big Bang @ School events came to Burton
The Big Bang near me events saw John Taylor Free School, Tatenhill bursting with science on Tuesday, as they hosted their first Big Bang Fair school event. Sponsored by Cameron Homes Ltd, the school played host to one of the biggest celebrations of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Maths) in the region. Feeder schools played their part and brought over 650 primary and secondary students attending the event as part of an enhanced learning day.
None stop STEM fueled activity
The excitement of workshops and exhibits filled the main room from corner to corner, leaving most of the young learners spoilt for choice as to what to see first!
University of Birmingham city, University of Wolverhampton and Coventry University brought a wealth of hands on activities whist also sharing the courses on offer. The Big Bang Events are renown for showcasing the careers on offer for young people today. Breaking down stereotypes and providing the hands-on activities that drive and enthuse a curious mind.
Robots demonstrating the world of technology, filled the floor area. Siemanns brought the ‘Driver less car challenge’ and Tablet Academy (image) featured their innovation programmes. The Learn by Design’s ‘Robot Rumble challenge’ never fails to add that extra buzz of excitement.
Entertaining the crowds
Science Presenter, Science theatre performer, Writer, Researcher, Fellow of public engagement for STEM and microbiologist supreme, known as ‘Dr Khechara’ wowed young learners with his science kit of tricks. Providing exciting experiments throughout the day, he shocked and amazed the audience with his experiments including fire.
Whilst the ground floor room was the main exhibitor space, throughout the school there were many different workshops encouraging learners to engage with hands-on demonstrations:
The Woodland Survival Crafts workshop taught bush-craft skills; as ropes were made out of natural resources.
Skill Supply UK showed how beneficial the use of drones and coding is, in producing landscape imagery.
Learn by Design’s iRail workshops showcased the rail industry, whilst demonstrating the science and engineering career opportunities available in this growing sector.
John Taylor High School challenged learners to think resourcefully, as learners designed, built, constructed the tallest and most resourceful tower, with the aim the structure holding a chocolate egg at it’s peak! Engineering skills tested to the max!
Learn by Design and Tomorrows Engineers introduced a taster session from the Energy Quest workshops. The electric car challenge is always a huge success as teams battle it out against their fellow team mates.
Special Guests
Special guest @SimonDWatt, biologist, sci com, writer and presenter joined the school. Simon, who supports our Big Bang events year on year, provided his talk on genetics. The fascinating show, left the learners amused and inspired by the similarities between comic superheroes and the genetics in natural world’s species.

Endless workshops, activities and exhibits, all inspired by STEAM, continued throughout the day. With thanks to loyal exhibitors such as RollsRoyce and JCB who continue to inspire the next generation and support The Big Bang events year on year. It is safe to say, that learners left the school event with more ambitions and inspiration to continue to explore more about STEM, STEAM in the future.
