Our education outreach team delivered the engineering and careers-based workshop, to explore opportunities within rail for young people and the types of jobs that are needed to keep the industry moving forward.

Joined by a current Civil Engineer from the HS2 project, students took part in a range of interactive activities that got them thinking about the environment, technology, rail and the future. The morning session was split into a skills audit and two team challenges.

Challenge One

Role Playing & Design

Students were asked to put themselves in the shoes of current job roles such as, Civil Engineers, Environmental Advisors, Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technicians and Customer Experience (CX) Designers.

From here, they were asked to design a railway station of the future, through their designated job role, with many opting for a more sustainable, environmentally-minded approach.

Challenge Two

Tunnel Building

This challenge saw students putting their new-found knowledge of job roles and design to the test as they constructed a model tunnel.

Using specific criteria, students had to build their tunnels using paper-based materials and masking tape, that not only stood up on their own but supported a set weight. This brought in different elements of STEM learning to achieve a well-thought out design and model.

Afternoon Activities

Career Opportunities & Rail Rush! Board Game

After an energetic morning, the afternoon session started with a discussion about the HS2 project and what it's all about. Within this, our education outreach team shared the many future career roles that may be open to the local community and the routes in which young people can go down to become a part of the industry.

To finish off the day, students played the Rail Rush! board game, designed by HS2 along the lines of railways. This board game is designed to get students to think about the environmental and community impact of high-speed rail construction.

Students competed against each other on their table to construct the highest point-scoring railway network on a map of the UK. The aim was to focus on the essential skills of staying positive and aiming high during this activity.

Session Feedback

The overall feedback from De Lisle College was fantastic! Students felt the challenges were very engaging and enjoyable, and were very grateful for the time the HS2 volunteers and our educational outreach team spent with them.

Teacher feedback has also been positive:

The day went really well, and I’ve had some really positive feedback about it from teachers, including our Assistant Headteacher, and other colleagues (as well as the students). Please pass on my thanks to the team who delivered this for us.
