NCS Skills Booster forms part of Writtle College ENRICHMENT WEEK

We’re excited to be delivering bespoke NCS Skills Booster sessions to Writtle College during December that will help young people focus on their well-being and future goals.


The Skills Booster sessions will champion the college’s programme of activities during their Enrichment Week in December 2021. Pupils are asked to contact their tutors for more information and to take advantage of this government funded NCS programme that aims to promote the transferable skills that young people need in their future careers.


‘Skills Booster’ forms part of the NCS FE and schools support. Launched last year, the programme has already supported over 500 schools and benefited more than 80,000 students across England.


There will be 5 Skills Booster sessions totalling 15 hours per student delivered over dates:


Monday 13th December

Tuesday 14th December

Wednesday 15th December


AM sessions will be 09:00 – 12:00

PM sessions will be 13:00 – 16:00


Government Funded NCS programme:


Sessions include:


Health and Wellbeing

  1. Healthy habits – categorising good and bad habits, creating healthy routines and habits for success.

  2. Stress and anxiety – the difference between stress and anxiety, recognising triggers.

  3. Resilience – the importance of building resilience and practicing impulse control.

  4. Managing expectations – recognising where our expectations come from, identifying realistic expectations, and working to achieve them through the formation of SMART goals.

  5. Wellbeing online – technology usage, the impact of social media on wellbeing and devising wellbeing strategies.

Careers and Progression

  1. Why work – motivations for work looking beyond the financial benefits, where to look for work.

  2. Route to future you – post-16 options, decision making.

  3. Personal and supporting statements – Assessing and identifying how hobbies can help to develop personal skills and qualities, customer service and handling complaints, practice writing a personal statement

Citizenship and British Values

  1. How do you score – British citizenship test – understanding what citizenship is and the process of ‘naturalisation’, assessing the importance of the ‘Life in the UK’ test.

  2. A diverse society – recognising our differences, the meaning of diversity and equality, the difference between equality and equity, understanding and recognising privilege and how to support others.

  3. Say no to hate – types of discrimination, the Equality Act 2010, recognising hate crime and preventing hate.

  4. Your voice – introduction to debating, the importance of voting.

  5. Community – defining community, mapping the local area, devising solutions to current social problems.


Employability

  1. Find out about you – identifying personality traits and conducting a personal SWOT analysis.

  2. CV builder - the dos and don’ts for CVs, using a CV to showcase skills and experience.

  3. The search is on – where to find employment, identifying which skills are needed for certain jobs, learning how to attain new skills.

  4. What does the internet say about you - recognising what employers look at when hiring, identifying what actions to take to look more professional online, the advantages of using a LinkedIn account.

  5. The interview experience – understanding what employers look for in job interviews, gaining interview skills through mock interview practice.


Volunteering

  1. What is volunteering – understanding what actions constitute volunteering.

  2. Why should we volunteer – evaluating the importance of volunteering and considering whether all work should be paid.

  3. Double benefit principle – considering and understanding the double benefit principle.

  4. Random acts of kindness vs volunteering – deciphering the difference between acts of kindness and volunteering.

  5. Volunteering to benefit the local community – creating unique ways to benefit the community through volunteer work.


Enrichment week starts on Monday 13th December at Writtle College and the students their are asked to speak to your tutor or Tara Simpson if you have any questions about the Skills Booster sessions.
